School is almost out for the kids, and summer is here (well it’s supposed to be…um.. Melbourne, we’re looking at you) but best of all the Holiday Season is officially upon us which means it’s time to celebrate and get creative.

1.Get into the festive spirit

The holiday season is all about spending time with the ones you love and what better way to celebrate then to chill out on the couch with some popcorn and a glass (or two) of wine watching a feel good holiday movie.

With so many movies out there it’s hard to just pick one to watch but don’t worry, Kelly from Be A Fun Mum has got you covered with her list of the Top 20 Family Christmas Movies.

From Elf to Love Actually there’s something for everyone and with Christmas fast approaching its time to get started with checking each one off the list!

If you’re stuck on ideas to keep them busy, why not get them involved in the Christmas decorating.

My Poppet has created these simple DIY Cereal Box Christmas Trees that are fun for the kids to make and look gorgeous around the house.

They’re fun, easy and will make your house feel festive and bright during the Christmas season!

While you’re at it, why not see what else you can create with items from around the house and share your ideas in the comments below.

3. Add a personal touch

‘Tis the season of giving and this year why not try something from the homemade  Gift Guide put together by Bake Play Smile with the help of a few other blogger friends! A homemade gift adds a personal touch to the act of giving and is a fun way to get through your loooong Christmas gift list.

How about some homemade Baileys Irish Cream- sounds delicious right? Or maybe some Candy Cane White Chocolate Fudge?

The only problem with these gift ideas is you’ll want to keep them for yourself so make sure you make one extra, for taste testing purposes, obviously.

Momentary video content and candid shots of the present moment are at the forefront of social media today. With social media giants Snapchat and Facebook fighting it out for the top spot it’s hard to recognise the benefits offered from the different platforms; Snapchat stories, Instagram Stories and new entrant Messenger Day.

Insta VS Snap

Snapchat

Snapchat stories is the OG platform for capturing and sharing spare of the moment photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. Snapchat is impulsive, fun and captures behind the scene action and live interactions in real time.

Geo-filters, face mapping filters and the ability to draw, add stickers and add text to images or videos give snapchat a fun and creative edge that is very appealing to the millennial demographic.

With features such as filters, drawing and stickers, it also offers a chance to get creative with your content. Better filters and customisation keep snapchat in the competitive space.

Instagram versus Snapchat

Instagram Stories

It used to be that Snapchat was where we would share the less perfect, spare of the moment snapshots of everyday life, Instagram was where the picture perfect shot was shared. With the introduction of Instagram Stories, Instagram is now moving into the the realm of spontaneous image and video sharing. So now people can see how much effort actually goes into that flat lay…

Instagram stories has created debate within the social media world over how similar it is the snapchat as it offers an almost identical service to snapchat on top of the original functions of Instagram.

With over 300 million daily active users, Instagram stories offers a wider reach and has a wider demographic appeal.

A new feature of Instagram stories that is ahead of the game is the ability to include a link in an Instagram story.

1. Instagram Stories - Creating

Messenger Day

New to the market of spontaneous image and video sharing is Messenger Day, an extension on the Facebook Messenger app.
Messenger Day is still in the testing stages and was only launched in Australia in October, it being tested here before being launched in larger markets such as the USA.
Still in the early stages, Messenger Day hasn’t taken off yet as it doesn’t differentiate itself from other competitors or offer benefits for its use.

Do you use any live stream platforms? Which do you like better?

If you’ve been on Instagram lately then you’re bound to have noticed that the world has developed an obsession with flat-lay photography.

However, if somehow you’ve lost your phone, been backpacking through the Grand Canyon and not had reception or are just new to the bandwagon and don’t know what flat-lay photography is, then listen up.

Flat-lay photography is literally that, a photo of objects taken from directly above as it lays flat on a surface. But you already knew that didn’t you?

Like anything there are certain techniques and elements that go into perfecting this craft and there’s nothing Nuffnang loves more than some Instagram-worthy photos. These tips will have you achieving flawless flat-lays in no time!

Pick your background

A simple one but an important one! The best part about flat-lay photography is that you can change up snaps as easily as switching out backdrops.

You want to think simple, clean and crisp when selecting a background for your flat-lay, too much pattern can distract from what you’re shooting.

You also want to keep in mind the objects that you’ll be capturing and pick a background with a colour that will accompany and compliment these items best. Go with a backdrop that has a subtle pattern or stick to a solid colour all together. If pink really is the new black then white is the new is the new pink and marble backdrops are the new luxe.

We suggest playing with different colours, patterns and textures. You can use any surfaces you have around your house, switch it up and keep experimenting!

Lighting

Lighting is an important aspect of any photo; to get a shot that looks like it was shot for Vogue, it’s crucial to ensure that you use the right lighting depending on what you’re photographing.

For lighter backdrops and a more minimalistic shot aim for shooting under a more natural and soft light. Artificial light can often look yellow toned and fluorescents tend to be very cool-based, this will wash out your photo and add harsh shadows.

Try shooting in a spot with lots of outside light, next to a window or under a skylight where you can get the natural light source from outside.

Also keep in mind the time of day when you’re shooting, direct sunlight can look very harsh in photos where the attention is focused on flat objects. Shooting photographs in the morning or early afternoon will provide optimal lighting as opposed to the suns orangey hues later in the day.

Setting out your objects

The layout of your objects is something that you should play around with when taking photos, anything goes and you should experiment and see what works best for each shot.

You can go with clean cut and crisp squares with equal spacing, you can overlap items, place them side-by-side, on an angle upside down or inside-out (okay maybe not inside out). You can opt for a random effect and arrange objects on different angles and keep some straight.

The sky is the limit; there are no rules that you need to stick to!

The great thing about using flat-lay photography is the range of content that you can capture using the method! From makeup and beauty products to food, outfits, home wares and anything else; if you name it, we bet you can take a flat-lay of it!

Flat-lay photography is such an easy way to take photos for your Instagram, blog, Facebook or whatever it might be. You can take photographs anywhere and of anything, play around with the shot and snap a professional looking pic anytime!

June marks the 6-month milestone of being officially half way through 2016. Where has the time gone?

Being this close to 2017 has made us stop and take a minute to look back on the past six months and remember all those new years resolutions that we forgot about come March and didn’t quite get around to fulfilling.

Here at Nuffnang we believe that you don’t have to wait until new years to make a change in your life for the better and we’re giving our resolutions another shot. We invite you to knock some off of your list before the end of the year too, so you can start 2017 as a new chapter with a fresh list of goals and never stop improving. Even though we already think you’re pretty great!

Get Fit

Whether it be running a marathon or losing 10 kilos, getting fit is one of the most popular new years resolutions for a reason. Being in good physical shape is crucial for your own happiness and wellbeing and you should never stop trying to be the best, happiest version of yourself.

Getting in shape may seem like a daunting task that is hard to achieve but if you need motivation Nuffnang can help! Check out some of our health blogs such as “Move Fuel Love” and “The Whole Daily” for fitness regimes, healthy recipes and tips to help you achieve your goals and get on your feet!

Save money

Money makes the world go round and we know just as well as anybody the struggle to save money these days- opportunities surround us daily to spend money on stuff that we don’t necessarily need.

We’re no strangers to the era of online shopping. In a time where e-commerce is skyrocketing and online spending is worth an estimated $1,471 billion dollars worldwide it can seem a struggle to save.

Saving money comes down to making ongoing choices and finding cheaper alternatives to your everyday spending. Throw in a little bit of prioritising and avoid grocery shopping when you’re hungry as impulse grocery shopping can have a negative effect on your wallet and lead to unhealthy eating throughout the week.

 Reduce Stress

Everybody knows what it’s like to have a bit of stress, it’s just a common element of life sometimes but having excess levels of stress can impact your overall happiness and quality of life.

To reduce the amount of stress that is present in your life try getting more sleep each night so you can take on the day with energy and positivity. Possibly look in to picking up new hobbies that can help you relax such as yoga or Pilates.

Most importantly, the best way to reduce stress is to spend some good old fashioned quality time with the people that you love the most. Try to set some time aside for yourself to catch up with your family regularly and watch as the stress packs up its bags and leaves your life.
